With the weather heating up, I am finally in the mood for smoothie bowls! This Collagen Acai Smoothie Bowl has no added sugar, a boost of collagen protein, and tons of fiber and antioxidants. It's so refreshing and satisfying! I topped mine with fresh fruit, protein granola, and a little unsweetened coconut.
Did you know? Acai "berries" are rich in anthocyanins, which give them their deep purple color and are powerful antioxidants in the body (source).
Why collagen?
I used collagen in this acai bowl because it doesn't change the texture or thicken the smoothie bowl like other protein powders can. Collagen also has appetite-suppressing protein, along with various benefits for skin and joint health!
My recommendation for collagen is LIV Body Marine Collagen, which is highly bioavailable and free from impurities. Their Strawberry Daiquiri flavor was amazing in this! That said, you could also use flavorless collagen if you add a little sweetener and maybe a few frozen strawberries to taste. Choosing the best frozen acai
For this recipe, I used Pitaya Foods Organic Premium Acai Berry Smoothie Packs. I love that these packs are widely available at most Walmarts and grocery stores, and have no added sugar! The only other ingredient in these packs are filtered water and citric acid.
Other ingredients
I used a small amount of almond milk to get the right texture for my smoothie bowl, but any milk or juice will do. You only need one-quarter cup!
For toppings, I added fresh strawberries, blueberries, and a little protein granola for some crunch. I even sprinkled a little unsweetened coconut on top! A little known fact is that acai naturally contains healthy fats (kind of like avocado) so I didn't need to add much extra fat to this bowl.
